Like last year I got the chance to shoot ESL One Cologne again, a very special event and probably the most important one of the year. It`s the 4th CSGO major I got to shoot and every event is special in it`s own. I think there is almost no esport event right now which gets more hype, which also rises the pressure to deliver something special for everybody. Starting with multiple mediaday weeks before the main event, the qualifiers and the event itself, everybody is giving 110% to deliver something which people will never forget.
I first want to start with the new match up graphics we pulled of for the first time. We shot 3-4 poses of every player and tried to combine them in one team GFX, to create some hype for the game, but also show the players from a different perspective, not with the standard “crossed-arms” and “serious-face” look. I read some comments that we forced players into those poses and make them look “not like they are”. We would never force players to do something on a media day what the don`t want to do – most of the players had a lot of fun and even came up with some really funny stuff (-> twitter.com/CLGkoosta – :D) and if the just want to stand there with hands in the pockets, also fine and looked as good as other stuff. This was also the first time I used 3D stuff in a graphic and I think it looked really good overall, we even included them into the broadcast later. Overall we put over 60 hours into this whole project, but I think in the end it was worth and we overall got some very positive feedback from players and the community – I think it was worth! Of course there is still a lot of room to improve, but I think we set a good bar for the start. A bit down I attached some examples, really would love to get some more feedback.
While writing this I already have 5 more ideas for future graphics in my head and I really hope that Helena and me can pull some of them off in the near future.
The event itself was actually pretty cool overall. Working along side 2 of my favorite people in the industry raises my mood right from the beginning and I was really looking forward to shoot that event. Sadly my final exam and working while studying, kinda killed me in the end and hit me hard that weekend. I was not really myself and I can see that clearly in my performance, I could have performed a lot better. Especially the final day was really bad from my side. In the end I still managed to collect some nice shots I want to share. Luckily I passed my exam, which means I can now fully concentrate on my job. For my next event I will definitely give more again, because I can still do a lot better.
Below the match up graphics you can find my favorite 50 photos of the whole event.
